Exeter Chiropractor, Karen, attends Harley Street Surgeons seminar?
It may seem strange to you, hearing that I went to a seminar with Cardiologists, Neurosurgeons and Urologists – covering topics including:
Back pain
Neck pain
Sciatica
Cauda equina
Palpitations
Chest pain
Breathlessness
Kidney stones
Prostate cancer
Common urological conditions
Why would a Chiropractor go on a seminar like this if they don’t directly treat these conditions?
Well, it’s incredibly important. Chiropractors spent a lot of time during their Masters degree not only learning about what they can treat, but also what they can’t. It’s so important that health professionals know their limits and recognise those things which need a totally different set of skills, and guide their patient to the most appropriate healthcare professional.
By continually refreshing my knowledge, I can strive to be one of the safest, most effective practitioners. Imagine coming in with what you think is back pain and it turned out to be a medical emergency!
Chiropractors are trained to take thorough histories, from which a huge amount of information can be grouped together to help establish a diagnosis. This is why it is so important our patients take the time to fill out their past medical history, and family medical history, to provide all the information we need to establish a diagnosis.
It’s not uncommon for people to come in and ask ‘is this information really necessary?’
What a patient thinks isn’t relevant may actually be a very important part of the jigsaw for us, so please, if you visit a Chiropractor, don’t hold back information. Don’t be embarrassed – we’ve heard all sorts over the years, and everything is confidential. The history helps us to tailor the examination which provides yet further information on the diagnosis and getting you the treatment you need as quickly as possible.
On the rare occasion Chiropractic care is not suitable for you, we will advise you on the most suitable person to see. With your consent, we will happily write to your GP or specialist, informing them of our examination findings and diagnosis, to ensure you get the care you need as soon as possible.
