1. Initial Paperwork and Health History

Just like any healthcare provider, your chiropractor will want to know about your medical history, current health concerns, and any past injuries. You’ll be emailed a link to your new patient form when booking, and on arrival at your first appointment your chiropractor will go through this form and ask you more detailed questions on:

  • Your symptoms (what they are, how long you’ve had them, what makes them better or worse)
  • Lifestyle factors (activity level, occupation, stress)
  • Past surgeries, accidents, or major illnesses
  • Any medications or supplements you’re currently taking

All this information really helps your chiropractor to understand the bigger picture. You will give you the opportunity to ask any questions and explain your health goals.

It’s really important to be open and honest, to help your chiropractor determine the best course of action to achieve your goals.

2. Physical Examination

Next, your chiropractor will perform a physical exam. This may include:

  • Posture analysis
  • Range of motion testing
  • Reflex and neurological assessments
  • Muscle strength and tone evaluation
  • Orthopaedic tests
  • Palpation (using hands to feel for tightness or stiffness)

In some cases your chiropractor may recommend further investigations to get a clearer picture of your bones and joints, especially if there is a history of trauma or chronic pain. Further imaging may include X-rays or an MRI and can be obtained via referral from your GP or privately (if self paying/ using insurance). In some cases blood tests may also be recommended to rule out certain bone related conditions, we are likely to refer you back to your NHS or Private GP for these.

3. Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

After the exam, your chiropractor will discuss their findings and explain what may be causing your discomfort or dysfunction. They’ll outline a personalized treatment plan, which may include:

  • The frequency of visits
  • Types of adjustments or therapies recommended
  • Home exercises or lifestyle changes
  • What results you can reasonably expect over time

If chiropractic care isn’t appropriate for your condition, your chiropractor will refer you to another healthcare provider.

4. Your First Adjustment

In many cases, you will receive your first chiropractic adjustment during this initial visit, though not always. Sometimes your chiropractor will wait until your next appointment, especially if they want to review X-rays or other diagnostics first. It’s important treatment is only given when your Chiropractor has all the information they require.

If you do get adjusted, you can expect:

  • Manual manipulation of the spine or joints
  • Gentle pressure or quick thrusts to help realign the body
  • Possible popping sounds (completely normal and painless for most people)

Your chiropractor may also use some or a combination of other methods including:

  • Activator – A small hand held device which applies a quick gentle impulse to the restricted joint.
  • Fascial release techniques to help relax and rebalance any tight soft tissue
  • Trigger point therapy to release any knots in the muscles

Chiropractic adjustments are not painful for the majority of patients. However, for those that do feel a bit tender it usually feels similar to how you might feel starting a new workout. Additional soft tissue and Chiropractic techniques used can also result in tenderness post-treatment. For those who do experience a little discomfort this usually subsides within 24-48 hours.

5. Aftercare and Follow-Up

Your chiropractor may provide guidance on:

  • Ice or heat application
  • Stretches or movements to avoid temporarily
  • Postural tips
  • Lifestyle advice
  • When to return for your next chiropractic appointment

Healing and progress take time, especially if you’re dealing with a chronic issue, so be patient and consistent with your appointments and at-home care.
