What do Chiropractors do?
Imagine your body as an electric circuit with light bulbs connected. Your Chiropractor is your mechanic helping to adjust and reset your body, so it can move forward with the healing process.
A perfectly connected circuit with no disruptions will function at its best. How we treat our bodies like most things in life will influence their performance.
A well looked after body will serve you well.
So how am I going to compare your body to an electric circuit?
Brain = Battery
Spinal Cord = Main mother board
Nerve roots to organs, skin etc = Wires to bulb
The signal comes from the Battery (Brain) sends the signal down the cord to the required nerve root. There are two nerve roots exiting every level within the spinal cord, these correspond to the side of the body they feed. These will send information to and from specific body part dependent on the level of the spinal column and will tell the relevant skin, organs, muscles etc what to do.
There are 6 Neck (cervical) vertebra, 12 Trunk (thoracic) vertebra, 5 lower back (lumbar) vertebra and finally the sacrum. These vertebrae are all stacked up creating the spinal canal (a protective tunnel) to house the spinal cord. The spinal cord is delicate and very pain sensitive, due to its vital job of sending signals to and from relative body parts, relaying the messages to the brain for processing. From the cord the previously mentioned nerve roots exit on either side of the body to corresponding organs, skin, muscles etc.
Let‘s imagine these nerve roots have light bulbs at the end of them. If somewhere between the brain and corresponding light bulb there is a compression this will affect the brightness of the bulb or worse case switch it off completely! This is just the same as with your organs, muscles, sensations etc. This compression can be anywhere along the path. It’s our job as Chiropractors to establish the cause and address that.
Human circuit
A mechanical restriction is a prime example of what Chiropractors can help you with. Chiropractors are trained to examine and diagnose your complaint and will work with you to restore a better functioning nervous system, and therefore biomechanics.
Nerves are very pain sensitive and have very poor blood supplies, when compared to muscle. Blood provides all the factors needed for repair hence why damage to a nerve root will take much longer to heal, than a muscle. The longer a nerve is left with compression / damage the poorer the recovery statistics.
Signs of nerve compression include: –
Loss of muscle power
Tingling sensations
Numbness
Burning sensations
Pins + Needles
Loss of Sensation
