FAQs

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession that focuses on a manual, hands-on approach to the treatment of mechanical disorders of the neuro-musculoskeletal system.

The name ‘Chiropractic’ derives from the Greek word ‘chiropraktikos’ meaning effective treatment by hand. Chiropractic is commonly associated with the treatment of back and neck pain, however chiropractors are also consulted regarding a range of other joint and/or muscular conditions.

At KH Chiropractic our Aldgate chiropractor ‘Karen’ takes a traditional approach to chiropractic aiming to identify and treat the cause of a pain or complaint and minimise the use of, or prolonged use of drugs.

How do I know if chiropractic is right for me?

We offer a free 15minte consultation for those unsure if chiropractic is suitable for them. This provides some time for you to ask any questions and hear how chiroprctic works with one of our qualified chiropractors.

Should you decide to book an initial consultation our Aldgate / Liverpool Street chiropractor will tke a full history about your complaint nd any previous traumas your body has been through. This is important as it ll builds up a bigger picture on your body how it may respond and how to tailor your treamtent to suit you specifically.

Following on from this your chiropractor will discuss what they have found following your chiropractic examination. They will also explain what they think is causing your complaint and explain the proposed treatment plan, including any potential risks involved. If your complaint is appropriate for chiropractic care you will be asked to provide written consent before receiving any treatment. Sometimes chiropractic care is not appropriate. Should the chiropractor feel this is the case it is likely they will refer you to your GP, or another healthcare provider.

  • Flexible / comfortable clothing
  • Wear appropriate underware

If you are taking any medication it is useful for you to bring the details along to your first appointment. It is also useful to bring along any x-rays, MRI’s or imaging reports that you may have, especially if they have been taken within the past couple of years.

You should also wear appropriate underwear for your chiropractic appointment, as you are likely to be asked to undress down to your underwear for examination purposes. There will be the opportunity to wear a back opening gown. You could also bring along a pair of flexible shorts to wear under the gown if it makes you feel more comfortable.

What can I expect to happen during the initial chiropractic consultation?

The chiropractor will collect you from the reception area and escort you to a treatment room. They will go over the information you have already provided, and then take a complete medical history.

Once they have recorded all the information they need, the chiropractor may ask you to undress down to your underwear and offer you a back opening clinic gown.

This is important for assessment purposes, however if you feel uncomfortable about wearing a back opening gown, please raise your concerns with your chiropractor.

With your consent the chiropractor will carry out a thorough examination to assist with making an informed diagnosis, and consequently determine if it is appropriate for you to receive chiropractic care. The chiropractor will treat you as appropriate on the first visit. Should the chiropractor feel it is important to obtain imaging before treatment they may refer you for some appropriate imaging first. The decision will be based on the individual presenting complaint and will be in their best interests.

When will I start my treatment?

Once a full case history, complete examination and explanation of your complaint has been achieved, most patients will receive an immediate treatment. However in some cases it may be necessary to refer the patients for further imaging such as xrays, ultrasound or MRI. Alternatively it may be necessary to refer you back to your GP for other tests, or onward referral to another healthcare professional. The decision of your chiropractor or massage therapist is for your safety and to make sure you receive the most suitable care.

Our Chiropractors have a 5 year degree which provides a good knowledge on picking up on conditions that require another specialists expertise. They will usually write you a letter to ensure you are passed on to the correct healthcare professional.

Our massage therapist may refer you to another helth professional or one of our chiropractors if they feel your complaint is not suitable for massage.

How many appointments will I need?

The number and frequency of appointments required will vary from patient to patient.

At KHChiropractic your improvement will be monitored very carefully on an ongoing basis to ensure that the treatment you are receiving is appropriate for you.

Things to consider that may play a part in the speed of recovery:-

  • Length of time you have had your complaint prior to coming for treatment
  • Severity (Are there any neurological signs? if so how advanced?)
  • If you (the patient) take an active part in your recovery such as improving your lifestyle and reducing or even better eliminating causative factors.
  • Stress levels (at home and or work)

Will treatment hurt?

Chiropractic treatment should not normally hurt however most patients who visit a chiropractor are already suffering from some discomfort or pain. this also means the area is inflamed. Our aim is to create a better environment for healing and therefore assist the body in moving from the inflammatory stage to the healing stage in the recovery process.

It is very important to inform patients that they may experience some post examination, and/or post treatment soreness as the area is inlfamed hence the feeling of pain in the first place. These symptoms should improve within 24-48hours but do vary from person to person (some people notice no tenderness following treatment and others are a lot more sensitive). If you are experiencing pain which concerns you after treatment please do give us a call or email us. We will call you back as soon as possible and give you further advice on how to manage it.

Many of our patients benefit from using an ice pack wrped in a towel for 5-10minutes on the area which is hurting. this acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and can help cal any inflammation from the problematic area.

Can I do anything to help with soreness?

Icing the area that is sore or uncomfortable can help, however the use of ice should be controlled. An ice pack, or ‘bag of peas’, should always be placed inside a thin cover (wrap in a tea towel) before placing on the skin. Ice should never be placed directly on the skin as it can burn. Ice should only be used for a maximum of 15 minutes at a time, and it should be used regularly (every few hours). If soreness or discomfort persists, the patient should seek advice from their Chiropractor.
